About Defence for Children International:

Defence for Children International (DCI) is a leading child rights-focused and membership-based grassroots movement placing all members on equal footing. Created during the International Year of the Child (1979), DCI coordinated the NGO input for the drafting of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) – the most widely-ratified human rights treaty in history. DCI’s mandate is to ensure ongoing, practical, systematic and concerted action directed towards effective implementation of the human rights codified in the UNCRC, by means of its effective coordination between different levels (national, regional and international) and its active membership within key networks and fora. DCI counts with 37 grassroot organisations (National Sections and Associated Members) in five different continents, involving over 300 trained and specialized local staff and volunteers, who contribute daily to defend and protect the human rights of children.

Location and working environment:

This position is based at the International Secretariat (IS) of DCI in Geneva, Switzerland. The IS is composed of a small team of permanent staff working together with other temporary positions and interns; it promotes advocacy and lobbying activities, capacity building, representation and monitoring at the UN and other international or regional organisations on behalf of the entire Movement.


Overall responsibilities:

The Communications and Fundraising Officer is in charge of internal and external communications of the DCI Movement, outreach activities, fundraising and resource development. The International Secretariat communicates in three official languages (English, French and Spanish).


Assigned duties:

  1. Communications and Outreach
  • Ensure DCI is up-to-date with modern and relevant communications strategies across a range of media.
  • Ensure all DCI Communication materials are up-to-date, relevant and tailored to the relevant stakeholder groups in the Movement, including:
    • Management and development DCI Website, and technical support for a secondary website
    • Publications, brochures, leaflets and any other organisational materials
    • Internal and external E-newsletters (4 times/year – in English, French and Spanish)
    • Online presence through DCI website as well as social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn).
  • Coordinate the DCI Working Group on Communications.
    • Lead activities to strengthen internal communications such as development and management of the SharePoint platform
  • Produce DCI’s Annual Report: collecting, compiling and editing information from the National Sections, the regional Vice-Presidents and the International Secretariat.
  • Implement the new branding identity for the whole DCI Movement
  • Manage the International Secretariat’s language translation process, including liaison with translators and interpreters, maintaining a language glossary, and ensuring timely and quality translation into relevant languages (English, French, Spanish, and Arabic as necessary).
  • Develop and strengthen relations with media and other strategic partners for communication and advocacy purposes.
  • Assist the Executive Director and the other staff of the IS in communications linked with advocacy initiatives, organization/participation in meetings and events, projects, preparation of press releases and briefing notes, among others.
  1. Fundraising and Resource Development
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the DCI Fundraising Strategy
  • Write effective fundraising applications and campaigns with a special focus in the private sector and Foundations.
  • Compile information required for developing proposals and preparing donor reports for grants awarded.
  • Research new donors such as private sector and philanthropic foundations and likely sources for core funding in Switzerland and abroad.
  • Contribute to the development of donor-oriented communication, including leaflets, social media and website content highlighting results and impact of donations.
  • Organise events and meetings with DCI donors and partners
  • Any other relevant tasks under supervision of the Executive Director


Required qualifications and skills:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent work experience) in communications, international relations, economics, human/child rights or related field
  • Project management knowledge and/or experience
  • Proven capacity to develop and implement effective communications and fundraising strategies in non-governmental or not-for-profit membership-based organisations
  • Proven capacity and experience in the production of media material such as website content, social media content, audio visual, and campaign materials, ideally in an international, multicultural context
  • Good knowledge of the principles of fundraising from institutional donors and private foundations and experience in soliciting funds from these sources
  • A good understanding of the functioning of the United Nations human rights mechanisms
  • An excellent command of both written and spoken English as well as good knowledge of Spanish; other languages (in particular French or Arabic) will be a distinct advantage
  • Fully computer literate; skilled and confident user of Microsoft Office/365; knowledge of SharePoint is a distinct advantage
  • Intercultural and interpersonal sensitivity and ability to represent DCI professionally in international fora
  • Proactive and can-do attitude, readiness to help out other team members as necessary
  • Ability to work in a team with resource constraints and work in a complex multicultural environment

Starting date asap or to be confirmed upon agreement. Due to short deadlines for the recruitment, this position is open to Swiss and EU nationals, as well as holders of a valid Swiss work permit.
