UN: New Report Finally Holds the Israeli Forces and Palestinian Armed Groups Accountable for Violations Against Children

UN Secretary-General Added Israeli Government Forces and Palestinian Armed Groups to “List of Shame”.

13 June 2024 – In a significant and overdue decision, the UN Secretary-General has added Israeli forces to his “list of shame” for the first time. This annual report highlights an unprecedented number of grave violations (an increase by 21%) against children in 2023, holding both sides accountable for their actions.

The United Nations verified 7,873 violations against 4,247 Palestinian children (3,073 boys, 1,174 girls), in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem (4,853), and the Gaza Strip (3,020). Violations were perpetrated by Israeli armed and security forces (5,698), Israeli settlers (51), unidentified perpetrators (51), Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s Al-Quds Brigades and other Palestinian armed groups (20), individual Palestinian perpetrators (1) and Palestinian Authority Security Forces (1). In addition, the process of attribution regarding the verified killing of Palestinian children (2,051 ) that occurred between 7 October and 31 December in the Gaza Strip is ongoing.

This inclusion in the Secretary-General’s report is a milestone and a long-overdue step toward accountability and justice for the numerous child victims of the conflict.

Other longstanding situations in the report also saw alarming increases in the levels of violence reported against children in the past year, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin, Myanmar, Nigeria, and Sudan.
