Statement delivered at HRC57 on Panel discussion on quality education for peace and tolerance for every child

In a statement during the Panel on quality education for peace and tolerance for every child, Mohammad from South Lebanon highlighted the devastating impact of conflict on children’s education. Mohammad’s village was destroyed by war, with his school, home, and surrounding orchards reduced to ruins. The destruction and displacement left him fearful of losing his chance to continue his education.
Despite these immense challenges, Mohammad found hope at an education centre in Bourj al-Barajneh, Beirut. Here, he was able to continue his studies and make new friends, though he deeply misses his former home and the space he once had for play. His experience underscores the vital role of education in rebuilding lives and fostering peace.
We are reminded that education is a fundamental right and a critical tool for overcoming adversity. For children affected by conflict and displacement, access to education is not only a pathway to personal development but also a means of fostering peace and stability in their communities.
We urge the international community to support educational initiatives that cater to children affected by conflict, ensuring they have the opportunity to continue their education regardless of their circumstances. Education is essential for building nations and promoting lasting peace.
