Palestinian Children Continue to be Arbitrarily Detained and Tortured

The latest report of the Secretary General of the United Nations on the Occupied Palestinian Territories presented to the Human Rights Council during its 24th session (September 2013) raises alarming human rights violations which are being continuously committed by the Israeli police and army, particularly towards Palestinian children. The report mentions that 236 Palestinian children were being detained (in date April 2013) having been arbitrarily arrested and transferred to Israeli prisons, 44 under the age of 16. These children are held for hours not being allowed to sleep, threatened while interrogated, subjected to degrading treatment, physical or psychological torture, exposed to poor health conditions and being denied their basic procedural rights (due process, access to justice, participation).

During the Human Rights Council, many States called on Israel to release these children, stressing that these cases were violating the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the UN Convention Against Torture.
