UN Committee on the Rights of the Child Convenes Round Table Consultation on Children’s Right to Access to Justice and Effective Remedies

2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the 3rd Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a Communications Procedure (OPIC). For this occasion, the University of Leiden with the UN Human Rights office of the High Commissioner and UNICEF organised a two-days event (10th to 11th April) where Alex Kamarotos, DCI Executive Director participated.

This event was also the opportunity to organise a Round Table Consultation on the new General Comment on 12th April. Indeed, during its 95th Session in January 2024, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child announced that the new General Comment (No. 27) will be dedicated to ”Children’s Right to Access to Justice and Effective Remedies’.

Access to justice for children is a fundamental aspect in upholding their rights and fostering accountability among state and non-state actors. However, numerous barriers hinder children from accessing justice and remedies, including their dependent status, lack of knowledge, and unfriendly legal processes. Read the concept here.

DCI will be contributing to the process of drafting this important General Concept, which is directly linked to the DCI overarching strategic priority on Justice for Children. Indeed, due to the financial restrictions at the United Nations and repercussions to treaty bodies, including UNCRC, important meetings of the UNCRC have been reduced or cancelled. In this connection, DCI will be organising a consultation on the first draft of the General Comment 27 in Geneva on 19 December. This meeting of experts and child participation will take place back-to-back with the Global Conference on Justice for Children Deprived of Liberty that DCI will be organising together with the NGO Panel on children deprived of liberty, on 17 and 18 December 2024.
