Protecting Children Deprived of their Liberty: Mauritania Takes a Decisive New Step by Organising a National Workshop on the Issue
Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, hosted a crucial event on 21st December, 2023. It was a national workshop focused on protecting children deprived of their liberty. This workshop marks a significant step forward for Mauritania in addressing this important issue.
Led by the Ministry of Justice in partnership with the Mauritanian Association for Mother and Child Health (AMSME), the national section of Defence for Children International (DCI) in Mauritania, the workshop aimed to address the situation of children deprived of their liberty in Mauritania. The workshop delved into the findings of the United Nations Global Study on children deprived of liberty. It also laid the groundwork for establishing a coalition to implement the study’s recommendations effectively.
Indeed, one of the workshop’s outcomes was the establishment of a national coalition on children deprived of their liberty. Founding members include government agencies, ministries, and civil society organisations. The coalition aims to meet regularly, adopt action plans, and facilitate experience-sharing among members.
DCI-Mauritania will serve as the technical secretariat for the coalition. Their role will be to coordinate meetings and ensure the effective implementation of the coalition’s objectives.
Key stakeholders in child protection attended the event, including government officials, UNICEF, NGOs such as Terre des Hommes and Noura, as well as representatives from civil society.
The Ministry of Justice, along with other relevant departments and organisations, provided support and expertise to the workshop. This collaborative effort demonstrates a unified commitment to protecting children’s rights in Mauritania and promoting alternatives to detention.
Overall, the workshop represents a significant milestone in Mauritania’s efforts to protect the rights of children deprived of their liberty. By fostering collaboration and implementing concrete action plans, Mauritania is taking decisive steps towards ensuring a brighter future for its children.
