This brief report includes the key contributions at the side-event “Widening Space by Young Human Rights Defenders” to the Forum on Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law on 21 November 2016.
The event created a space for young human rights defenders to share their local realities and the ways in which they contribute to the protection and promotion of human rights, in their communities and globally.
Ayesha Munu of Sierra Leone, and beneficiary of DCI’s programmes, intervened during the panel discussion. She highlighted examples of what could be done to create a wider space for young human rights defenders:
“For one thing, Defence for Children International (DCI) in their Girls Advocacy Alliance (GAA) project has a special segment wherein communities and school work hand-in-hand with young girls who are advocates, giving them the platform to identify their issues and to seek out solutions to these issues. So a project like this allows young girls to build their capacity, to build their confidence level, to identify their weakness and to build their strength.”
