47th session of the UN Human Rights Council: Joint statement ID with the Special Rapporteur on violence against women

Defence for Children International commends the efforts of the Special Rapporteur to give particular attention to rape. According to UNICEF, 1 in 10 girls under age 20 have been subjected to forced sexual acts, globally.

Many States still permit the ‘legal rape’ of thousands of teenage girls every year, for example in the context of child marriage or because of low age of consent. Sexual violence and abuse are most frequently committed as expressions of power and dominance.
