Defence for Children International (DCI) delivered a statement during the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council under Item 3: Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children.
Drawing on its longstanding work to strengthen anti-trafficking legislation and child protection systems across the country, DCI-Sierra Leone highlighted the continued prevalence of human trafficking and its disproportionate impact on children. According to the Trafficking in Persons Secretariat, 64 victims of trafficking were identified and rescued in 2025, including 52 children, more than 80% of all victims.
While efforts to identify and support victims have increased, accountability remains limited. Only three trafficking convictions were secured in Sierra Leone between 2024 and 2025, underscoring the need to strengthen investigations, prosecutions, and prevention efforts.
DCI called on Member States to:
- Strengthen anti-trafficking measures through improved investigation and prosecution tools,
- Increase awareness-raising among children and youth,
- Enhance cross-border cooperation,
- Strengthen regional investigations, and
- Expand community-based prevention programmes.
