16th July: COVID-19’s impact on Children Deprived of Liberty

📅SAVE THE DATE: JULY 16th 2020

Children deprived of their liberty number in the millions but remain a largely invisible group. The 2019 UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty presented a global overview of the situation of children deprived of their liberty across the world, with new data regarding the scale of the problem, and evidence of its harmful effects on children. The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted further the vulnerability of children deprived of liberty. This webinar will explore Covid-19’s impact on children deprived of liberty, highlight key findings of the Global Study, present good practices, and discuss the way forward.

This side event will explore how to better develop data collection on children deprived of liberty, looking to establish a permanent data collection methodology in this area.  In particular, it will focus on issues raised by the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty. Data collection goes beyond just counting the number of children deprived of liberty, it also includes examining how children experience deprivation of liberty and the crucial role this plays in the analysis.
